Leadership Programs

Note that this is a list of resources of our neighboring programs and not so neighboring programs. Many are run as a chamber of commerce or city program. Leadership Sunnyvale is unusual in that it is an independent 501c(3) non-profit which is managed by its own alumni. This is the most unusual of all of leadership program structures.

National & State Leadership Associations & Resources

(United States) The Community Leadership Association (formerly NACLO - National Association of Community Leadership Organizations) directly inspired many of the local leadership programs in the area.
(California) California Association of Leadership Programs "CALP", SVL is a member of this organization,

(University of Illinois) Community and Economic Development, one of the organization that initiated leadership programs around the nation in the early 1980's. This website is an incredible resource for practical research-based information and programs to help individuals, families, organizations, businesses and urban communities. Go Illini! (Cupertino) Leadership Cupertino - on hiatus for 2004 to present - run by Cupertino Chamber of Commerce
(De Anza College) Asian Pacific American Leadership Institute (APALI) Founded in 1997, of Silicon Valley at De Anza College is supported by the private and community sectors. The strategic focus of APALI's work is to develop high-quality, multi-generational leadership programs for the Silicon Valley community, where Asian Americans have grown to about one third of the population. APALI works with a number of partner organizations to promote civic participation and societal improvements. APALI is committed to including well-qualified participants from low income and immigrant backgrounds
(Gilroy) Leadership Gilroy - run by the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce
(Los Gatos) Leadership Los Gatos - is a cooperative program between the Town of Los Gatos and the Los Gatos Chamber of Commerce
(Morgan Hill) Leadership Morgan Hill - run by the Morgan Hill Chamber of Commerce
(Mountain View) Leadership Mountain View - run by the Mountain View Chamber of Commerce
(Palo Alto) "be the change" - run by Acterra. Whose mission is: "To create local solutions that foster a healthy natural environment." Formed in 2000 by the merger of the Peninsula Conservation Center Foundation (founded in 1970) and Bay Area Action (formed in 1990). This is a program which requires unique environmental community projects for each participant. This is unusual and highly ambitious.
(Palo Alto, East Palo Alto & Menlo Park) Leadership Midpeninsula - on hiatus for 2003-present - run by the Palo Alto Chamber of Commerce
(Santa Clara) Leadership Santa Clara - run by the City of Santa Clara
(San Jose) Community Leadership San Jose Silicon Valley - run by the San Jose Chamber of Commerce
(Silicon Valley) American Leadership Forum Silicon Valley, ALF, selects senior leaders from business, social and political spheres. ALF has been independent non-profit since 1980.
(Sunnyvale) Leadership Sunnyvale is an independent program run by and owned by alumni of the program; it is one of the programs of Silicon Valley Leadership (SVL) which is the 501C3 non-profit company. Leadership Sunnyvale started in 1985.

(Napa) Leadership Napa is an independent non-profit which is has its office at the Napa Valley Chamber of Commerce, hurray to the Napa Valley Chamber for their enlightened involvement!
(Petaluma) Leadership Petaluma is run by the Petaluma Chamber of Commerce
(Redding) Leadership Redding is run by the Shasta Regional Community Foundation. The Community Foundation was created out of The Grant and Resource Center of Northern California, a management assistance organization established in 1992 to serve nonprofit organizations in the nine counties of far northern California.
(Salinas Valley) Leadership Salinas. Run by the Salinas Valley Chamber of Commerce.
(San Benito County) Leadership San Benito is relative new. The County Chamber website contains directions of how to contact this program.
(San Diego) Lead San Diego is a independent nonprofit organization that covers the County of San Diego and they have a very attractive website
(San Rafael) Grassroots Leadership Academy is organized by Marin Grassroots Leadership Network
(Santa Barbara County) Leadership Santa Barbara is an independent 501c3 nonprofit organization
(Santa Cruz County) Leadership Santa Cruz was founded in 1985
(Santa Maria Valley) Leadership Santa Maria Valley is run by the Santa Maria Valley Chamber of Commerce, doesn't seem to be active at this time
(Santa Rosa) Leadership Santa Rosa is run by the Santa Rosa Chamber of Commerce. By the way, note on the information page that our Ann Hines is one of the "LSR" Steering Committee members! She went through the program when moving to the area a few years ago
(Stockton) Leadership Stockton is run by the Stockton Valley Chamber of Commerce and the first program in the state of California
(Tom Peters Group) Yes, Tom Peters Group is a private company. But in honor of the time that TPG gave to helping Leadership Sunnyvale in the first years of the program in training and guidance, we include them. And yes, TPG did give classes to Leadership Sunnyvale in the past

(Ventura County) Ventura County Leadership Academy is a nonprofit organization. The VLCA website does not seem to be up and running anymore, but the CORO description is still up and running.

(Lancaster, Pennsylvania) Leadership Lancaster, is a division of The Foundation of the Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce & Industry
(San Francisco, Los Angeles, St. Louis, New York & Pittsburgh) CORO, Private company since 1942. They have a very good mission statement.
(Michigan, Oakland County) Leadership Oakland County, Michigan - run by an independent non-profit
(Texas, Austin) Leadership Austin, an independent 501(c)(3) organization, "The More You Know The Better It Gets"
(Texas, Plainview) Leadership Plainview, must contact Chamber of Commerce directly for information. No dedicated website.
(Seattle, WA) Neighborhood Leadership, run by the city for support of strong neighborhoods.
(Virginia, Metro Richmond) Leadership Metro Richmond, a nationally recognized program which has great resources online. Well worth a visit to the website.
(Wisconsin, Marathon County) Chamber of Commerce run Leadership, check out their new improved G2 program, worthy of a visit.

(International) International Leadership Association
(London) Leadership London, a site for people taking part in the Leadership London Programme
(London) Leadership London is a fifteen day study abroad experience. Twelve students from diverse backgrounds and majors will be selected to participate in the program. Participants will investigate how leadership is viewed in a country different from the United States.
