Informational Meeting - A big Success!
Posted on Friday, August 20, 2004

The recruiting session was huge success. There were around forty-five people present, with a nice mix of board members, alumni and interested people with their invitees, people who responded to the "concerned citizen letter," and incoming class members.

Mayor John Howe, Class of '98 opened the meeting with a presentation, followed by council member Julia Miller, Class of '87. Marie Kuykendall, Class of '97, gave a remarkable accounting of her experience when she took the class.

State Of The City Awards
Posted July 4, 2004

The State of the City "Picnic In The Park" couldn't have been planned on a nicer day. We were greatful for a succinct "State of the City" speech by Mayor John Howe '98. Plus, the event was a great way to reconnect with many people around the city as well as watch the annual city awards being handed out. Leadership Sunnyvale was well represented by the nominees. Leadership Sunnyvale would like to extend a well deserved congratulations to the following for their State of the City Awards:

Jeanine Stanek, class of '92, who won the special Mayor's Award

The Class of '99 volunteered at this year's event. In the past few years, this class has volunteered at many civic events! This is the most active class that coordinates as a class in all of Leadership Sunnyvale, good going Class of '99!

The Dinner at the Dump "2" was a wild success.
A lucky 470 people who participated in the 2nd dinner found fantastic food and a fun event. "2" far exceeded the Inaugural event where 300 people participated.

We hope everyone who wanted one of those wonderful 1/8th scale working trash dumpster, that is of the style used around Sunnyvale, was able to buy one at the event! Specialty Solid Waste and Recycling sponsored this event supporting both Sunnyvale Community Services and Leadership Sunnyvale. The event was held at the Specialty Solid Waste & Recycling corporate headquarters on Thomas Road in the city of Santa Clara. New estimates are that the total raised exceeded $21,500.00 to be split evenly between the two non-profit organizations. Again thanks to Jerry & Julie Nabhan and Rebecca Buldo for a wonderful event and fundraiser!

Alumni manned the Sunnyvale Art & Wine Festival 2004 at one of the soda booths. A full 21 alumni participated! Thanks to Jane Shoemaker '90 and Nellie Hungerford '02 for organizing everyone. All proceeds from the festival will go to Alumni events in the future. The weather was fantastic this year and the booth was placed well to visit with many people when not busy selling.

We learned at the Sunnyvale Art & Wine Festival that our own Gordon Markley, class of '94, will be the San Francisco Bay Area Shriner's Potentate for the year 2010. For those who are not familiar with the position's title, think "Big Cheese". It looks like the Shriners could use some long term planning.

Great news from Jeanine Stanek '92. She writes: "Did you know that Nellie Hungerford has been selected as the Sunnyvale School District 'Management Team Member of the Year'? She and other nominees including Larry Curb LS '86 and Nola Eckley '91 will be honored at the Board room from 4:30-6:30 on Thursday." Congratulations to alumni nominees and Nellie!

Congratulations to the class of 2003-2004, who are a welcome new addition to the Leadership Alumni! Graduation at Synopsys, was a wonderful affair that included a Chinese dragon for good luck and a visit by the game "Jeopardy." The class was presented with their bright yellow Leadership caps, pens and hunter green polo shirts with the bright gold Leadership Sunnyvale logo and Synopsys logo. Guests included Mayer Howe '98, Vice-Mayer Chu '01 and council members Hamilton '97, Lee '01, Miller '87, and Swegles '92. It was a treat to see Rhonda Royce, who has been training Leadership Sunnyvale, "Communicating Like a Leader" class since the beginning of the program in 1986!
